On September 9, 1998, the JMU Board of Visitors named Linwood H. Rose as the institution's 5th President. He has worked at JMU since 1975, and called his new job "the best presidency in America."
A year later, a hurricane that threatened the day before the inauguration dissipated into a  brilliantly clear morning on September 17, 1999.

International students with flags of their home countries brought color to the pageantry.

The James Madison University Wind Symphony added the right notes for pomp and ceremony.

Theatre professor Dr. Roger Hall invoked President James Madison and read selections from Madison's writings.

Invested with the chain of office, Dr. Rose united all members of the University community with his theme, “All Together One.”

Following a popular tradition established by previous president Dr. Ronald Carrier, Dr. Rose mingles with students.
