Bergis Jules, project director of Documenting the Now (https://www.docnow.io), will be discussing his advocacy work on behalf of community-based archives and his efforts to document Black history on the Web, especially social media content covering the work of Black American activists. His talk will mainly cover his recent work on the Architecting Sustainable Futures initiative and Documenting the Now. Foundational to both of these projects are principles based on an ethics of care, long-term sustainability, and a commitment to equity and transparency when collecting and preserving archival content that primarily documents the lives of marginalized and oppressed people.
This event is co-sponsored by JMU College of Arts and Letters, JMU Office of Access and Inclusion, JMU English Department, JMU Libraries Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, The Cohen Center for the Humanities, Africana Literatures and Cultures Workshop, and the Institute for Creative Inquiry.
