Comic Books, Analysis, and Digital Scholarship

Dr. Brian Flota, Humanities Librarian, and Dr. Steven Holloway, Director of Metadata Strategies, are co-teaching an Honors 300 course titled “Advanced Special Topics in Honors—Comic Books, Analysis, and Digital Scholarship.” The first goal of the class is to immerse students into the cultural and critical landscape of comic books and the graphic novel. The second goal is to familiarize them with digital humanities techniques as a means to find new ways of analyzing comics. Assignments include close readings of canonical graphic novels (such as Moore and Gibbons’ Watchmen, Spiegelman’s Maus, and Bechdel’s Fun Home), XML coding of “Golden Age” comics, individual student presentations on comic-related topics, and larger-scale group projects that make use of IBM Watson and Comic Life software.

If you have any questions about this class, feel free to email Drs. Flota (flotabc@jmu.edu) and Holloway (hollowsw@jmu.edu) for more information.
