Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime
All
students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to the first
Special Collections Speaker Series of the academic year:
Dr. Deborah Whaley, Professor of American Studies from the
University of Iowa, will give a presentation on her recent publication Black
Women in Sequence: Re-Inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime. Whaley’s work offers the first full-length
treatment of the representation of black women in comics and comics-inspired
genres. Her talk will complement Special Collections’ ongoing collecting initiative to diversify
the comic book collection.
Join us
Thursday, September 20, in Carrier Library 301 from 5 to 6pm for this
lecture, which is co-sponsored by the Visiting Scholars Program, the Special
Collections Speaker Series, the Africana Literatures and Cultures Workshop, the
Africana Studies Program, and the IDEA Grant Committee. Refreshments will be
provided. Free parking is available in the Mason Street Parking Deck, levels 3
