Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime

All students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to the first Special Collections Speaker Series of the academic year:

Dr. Deborah Whaley, Professor of American Studies from the University of Iowa, will give a presentation on her recent publication Black Women in Sequence: Re-Inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime. Whaley’s work offers the first full-length treatment of the representation of black women in comics and comics-inspired genres. Her talk will complement Special Collections’ ongoing collecting initiative to diversify the comic book collection.

Join us Thursday, September 20, in Carrier Library 301 from 5 to 6pm for this lecture, which is co-sponsored by the Visiting Scholars Program, the Special Collections Speaker Series, the Africana Literatures and Cultures Workshop, the Africana Studies Program, and the IDEA Grant Committee. Refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available in the Mason Street Parking Deck, levels 3 and higher. Questions? Please contact Kate Morris (library-special@jmu.edu), Head of JMU Special Collections.
